SEO is a huge subject that can have a big impact on the performance of your website. In this article, we take a look at what tools Umbraco provides out of the box to aid organic SEO and what we do to take this further to meet your needs with or without an SEO consultant.
What Umbraco provides “out of the box”
Umbraco is a flexible CMS that you set up the way you want. It does not force you to do things a certain way and as such, there isn’t much in the way of “out of the box” features. There are however two fundamental features that aid SEO without any additional effort.
Clean, structured URL’s
Umbraco content is organised in a folder-like parent/child structure. This makes content easy to find and navigate. The URLs follow this structure, so you end up with good clean URLs like this:
This semantically correct format is good enough to serve as its own call to action text and brings the following benefits:
- Improved user experience
- Improved Rankings
- Improved Sharing - some websites will not reformat good semantically correct URLs
URL Redirect Management
If a page is renamed or moved, Umbraco will automatically create a redirect to the new page. This means that the link equity (or current ranking of the page) is transferred to the new page and not lost.
What we add as standard to every website project
This is where it gets a bit more fun. There are some things that are considered best practice and all websites should have to be search optimised. Here are a couple of functions which we add on to automate and make basic SEO tasks easier.
Instead of just a list of fields, this editor adds a preview of what your listing might look like on the Google search results pages. We also show a character counter to help maximise your visible search result. Lastly, we highlight where your keywords appear to ensure you create the most optimised content.
An XML sitemap is used by Search Engines to see which pages you want indexed, when they were last updated, how important you consider them (in relation to other pages on your site) and how often they are updated. Creating this map manually would be extremely time consuming and prone to error. We automate this so each time a page is created, renamed, updated or deleted, the sitemap is instantly updated automatically behind the scenes.
Beyond these great SEO features, we also work with clients on a bespoke basis to provide specific features in Umbraco such as Structured Data and Social Media Sharing specifications. For more information on this, please email me or take a look at our previous article:
